THE TIME MACHINE TO ROARING TWENTIES

Date: Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 6 p.m.
Duration: ’90 (with an intermission)

Hot jazz, sweet music, and dance music—the big band music of the 20th century, which arrived in Europe from America in the late 1920s and still definitely makes us want to dance.

The Bratislava Hot Serenaders Orchestra takes its audience back to the lively era of 1920s hot jazz and 1930s sweet dance music. The orchestra promises an unforgettable experience by evoking a musical era that is long gone but certainly not forgotten. All this with authentic 100-year-old instruments and the era’s costumes.

The Bratislava Hot Serenaders Orchestra is one of the most original musical ensembles in Slovakia belongs to the list of the few strictly “early jazz” oriented bands in the world. The band’s 19 enthusiastic musicians have played together without interruption since the formation of the group in season 1991/1992. Their playing adheres to the sound, style, and feel of such orchestra’s as Paul Whiteman, Jean Goldkette, and Duke Ellington, in addition to featuring Czech, Slovak, and other European classic jazz tunes of the period.

The ensemble was founded and is still led by Juraj Bartoš, the most outstanding Slovak trumpet player and classical musician. The band’s appearance and sound uncompromisingly evoke the era of the music they play, the 1920s and 1930s. The performances of the 18-member ensemble are enriched and made even more stylish by a female vocal trio. In 1994, the band won the Sidney d’Or Prix award at the festival of music from the 1920s and 1930s in Saint Raphael, France. In addition to American hits of the era, German and Slovak compositions, primarily those of František Krištof Veselý, form an important part of the band’s repertoire. The Bratislava-based band has released fourteen CDs to date, which have won numerous awards.

The Serenaders band regularly give concerts and perform at festivals in Slovakia and abroad, including: Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, France, Italy, Netherlands, Russian Federation, United Kingdom.
